Mass Perception / since 2012

The band

We’re an alt rock band. We’ve played heavier, we’ve slowed down, and we still like hearing where a song might go next.

Who’s playing

Four of us.

Pixel portrait of Marek

Marek

Vocals & electronics

Sings, plays the synths and started out on bass. Live, he tends to go one step further than planned.

Pixel portrait of Filip

Filip

Guitar, songwriting & electronics

Plays guitar and brings in a lot of the parts. Likes a song to take a turn you didn't see coming, then tries not to get lost in it.

Pixel portrait of Juraj

Juraj

Bass

Plays bass, loves heavy music and also sings medieval choral music. His parts tend to go where the others wouldn't.

Pixel portrait of Brano

Brano

Drums

On drums since February 2016. He came from bigger bands and quietly sorted out the live sound, starting with the volume.

How we got here

It took a while.

The full story, era by era ↗

We stopped trying to have every button at maximum.

Our roots go back to high school, when Marek brought Filip along to play with friends. Juraj joined later, but those sessions never turned into anything concrete. After college, we started talking about doing it for real. We practised as two, sometimes three people, and played with a few drummers before Adam appeared out of nowhere and matched what we wanted.

We were exploring heavier, darker music then. Longer songs, more complicated parts, because we liked playing them. That led to A Few Screams and Whispers, a concept demo recorded at Kobka Studio in Martin with Brian Bajak. Intermezzos connected the songs and blurred their boundaries.

After a lot of small gigs, we still wanted room to try other things: something almost pop-like, or full screams when the song called for it. The sound settled closer to rock. We had different opinions about the direction, and eventually that lineup couldn’t move forward. Adam left, and after searching for a drummer we called Brano. A few sessions together felt right.

Bilbo Beats Chemistry caught that transition: rock songs mostly written on a seven-string guitar. Brano also helped us get the live setup into shape. We gradually reduced our stage volume and gave sound engineers more room to work, with computer-coordinated sound and programmed lights for some shows.

Then things slowed down. Family lives changed, and we questioned the chances of doing music professionally. We talked about playing just once or twice a year. But rehearsal demos kept piling up, and people at the occasional gigs kept telling us the new material was good. We found the will to continue.

The writing changed with us. We stopped trying to have every button at maximum. The songs became easier to follow and closer to how we actually felt. We returned to the studio for Stone It Up and Weekend, then recorded three more songs in 2025. That’s the material we’re working toward releasing now.

In the rehearsal room

Like Lego pieces.

Sometimes the riff that started a song doesn’t even end up in it.

Usually, Marek or Filip brings in some parts we can build from. We try ideas together, take them home and each work on our own parts, then come back to hear what fits. Every instrument needs its place. Sometimes the riff that started a song doesn’t even end up in it.

A song stays open through recording. That’s when we hear what needs cutting, what needs adding, or where the rhythm needs to change. We still like the next section to surprise you. These days, we want the different parts to sound like they belong together.

We write from emotions and what feels right at the time. Stone It Up started with old friendship and how a reunion feels. That was the spark for us. We’d rather leave you room to connect the song to your own life.
